A product key only activates the edition it was made for. Common mismatches:
- Windows Home key on Windows Pro: won’t activate. Install Windows Home, or use a Pro key.
- Windows Pro key on Windows Home: starts an upgrade to Pro, which keeps your files and apps. See How to upgrade Windows editions.
- Office editions: an Office Standard key won’t activate Professional Plus, and a PC-only edition won’t activate Office for Mac. Uninstall the wrong edition and install the one that matches your key.
How to see what’s installed
- Windows: Settings → System → About, then look at Edition.
- Office: open Word and go to File → Account.
