Removing older versions before installing a new one prevents conflicts and activation problems.
On Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Go to Apps → Installed apps (on Windows 10: Apps → Apps & features).
- Find your Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 entry, select it and choose Uninstall.
- Restart your computer when it’s done.
If the normal uninstall fails, Microsoft offers a free Office uninstall support tool on its support website.
On a Mac
- Open Finder → Applications.
- Drag the Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote) to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash and restart.
Uninstalling Office doesn’t delete your documents, but it’s still wise to back them up.
